الملخص

‘Ilm Gharīb al-Ḥadīth the discipline devoted to explaining the rare and obscure words occurring in the reports of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his Companions occupies a foundational place among the sciences concerned with the text (matn) of Hadith. Employing a qualitative, analytical, and historical-doctrinal method, this study defines gharābah both lexically and technically, traces the linguistic, tribal, and diachronic causes that render certain prophetic vocabulary obscure, and delineates the boundary separating Gharīb al-Ḥadīth from the cognate disciplines of Mukhtalif al-Ḥadīth and Mushkil al-Ḥadīth. It shows that the discipline's chief value lies in guarding the transmitted text against scribal corruption (taṣḥīf and taḥrīf) and in unlocking meanings that would otherwise remain closed to the reader, and that the soundest method of explanation is for one hadith to interpret another. The study then traces the historical development of the genre from its earliest, now-lost beginnings with Abū ‘Ubaydah Ma‘mar ibn al-Muthannā and al-Naḍr ibn Shumayl, through the foundational works of Abū ‘Ubayd al-Qāsim ibn Sallām, Ibn Qutaybah, Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī, al-Saraqusṭī, and al-Khaṭṭābī, to the alphabetically-arranged dictionaries of al-Harawī, Abū Mūsā al-Madīnī, al-Zamakhsharī, and Ibn al-Jawzī, culminating in Ibn al-Athīr's al-Nihāyah fī Gharīb al-Ḥadīth wa'l-Athar. It further surveys works devoted to the gharā’ib of single canonical collections, such as Qāḍī ‘Iyāḍ's Mashāriq al-Anwār and al-Zarkashī's al-Tanqīḥ. The study concludes that this genre, structured across musnad-based, alphabetical, and topical arrangements, remains an indispensable and underexplored resource for the correct comprehension of prophetic speech, and calls for renewed scholarly and Urdu-language engagement with it.
